Eye's Wide Open - Chapter Forty Nine

Sound asleep, Dimitri gets some much-needed sleep from being on the move for so long to get what was needed to save Emily's life that he didn't even realize that he had fallen asleep.

Slowly stirring from his sleep, he can feel Emily in his arms.

Dimitri's eyes spring to life when it dawns on him that Emily is no longer just lying in the position that she was when he fell asleep. Emily was now snuggled up to his side like she always did when they would sleep together every night. Dimitri could feel Emily breathing steady as his hand rested on her side.

Slowly moving Emily out of his arms, Dimitri slides out of bed and just stares at her, sleeping peacefully. "Is this a dream?" Dimitri thought as he rubbed his face. Dimitri moved closer to Emily to wake her like he had always done since they had moved back to his house. Dimitri paused when reality hit him. This was not a dream, but a reality of what he had done to her. Dimitri wanted to wake her up but didn't want to disturb her either. He stood and pondered the decision.

All of a sudden, Emily rolls over away from him, still asleep. Dimitri's stops breathing as he watches in amazement. "Emily, are you awake?" Dimitri says in a whisper as he sits on the side of the bed.

Emily never says a word as Dimitri finally gets up the nerve to reach over and roll her over to face him. Emily faces upward on her back but does not wake when Dimitri moves her. "Emily, please wake up, love," Dimitri whispers as he strokes her hair.

Choking back the tears, Dimitri leans down to Emily. "I know your in there. You moved love, come back to me. Please wake up," he whispers.

Dimitri waits and waits as Emily lays still and doesn't move a muscle. "Emily, come back to me," he tells her as his voice starts to tremble with disappointment.

Almost losing hope, Dimitri scoops Emily up from the bed and pulls her into his arms. Dimitri takes Emily to the end of the bed and sits down with her on his lap. Emily's head falls to Dimitri's shoulder as he sits there, rubbing her hand and back. "You need to come back to me," Dimitri says with demand in his voice.

"I'm so sorry for what I did to you. I will never forgive myself if you don't come back to me. Please, Emily, come back. We're going to have a baby, and you need to come back to me. I need you more now than ever," Dimitri says as he pulls her closer to him.

Emily shifts in Dimitri's arms, and her eyes flutter open. Dimitri gasps as he turns her in his arms. "Hey you," Dimitri whispers as he strokes Emily's face.

"Welcome back, don't do that to me ever again," he says in a stern voice. "Did I die?" I ask. "Only for a brief moment, I thought I lost you forever. My world ended, Emily. I can't live without you. I will never put you in harm's way again. I can't tell you how sorry I am for what I did. When Daniel called and said you had died, I lost it. I would have never forgiven myself," Dimitri says.

"You and this baby are my world," Dimitri says as he strokes my face. "What! What are you talking about? A baby! Am I pregnant?" I gasp at the sudden shock.

"Yes, love you are with child. My child and I will protect you and our son or daughter with my life," Dimitri whispers as he pulls me closer.

A baby, a baby with Dimitri, my one wish that I had a long time ago. A new pain opens for a brief moment when I remember the first child we lost, but a new joy fills me when I think of a little girl or boy that I thought was impossible to have was finally coming true. I lean over, taking Dimitri's face into my hands. "Never feel bad for what you did. I told you to do it. It was my choice. So, never blame yourself for what happened. I'm fine, and now we are going to start a new life together. I don't regret anything. I have you back, and that means the world to me, I tell him as tears form in my eyes.

Then a sudden fear hits me. "Dimitri, you were a Nightwalker when we.....What if the baby is a Night Walker too?" I ask with a daunting fear of the truth. "We don't know just yet what the baby is, but it's alive, and that's all the matters to me. I got you and the baby. It doesn't matter what it is. We will face the situation no matter what the outcome. We will make this work," Dimitri says as he tries to reassure me. But deep down inside, I'm scared to death.

Dimitri calls for the nurse as he keeps me held tight in his arms. I'm a bit surprised when I see Lisa walk into the room. I still remember getting checkups from Lisa for years. I find it surprising that she was not killed with everyone else when the Nightwalkers evaded our home. "Can you strip down to your under where so I can examine you and the baby?" Lisa asks. Dimitri sets me on the edge of the bed and helps me take off my nightclothes. Dimitri then helps me get to the top of the bed. I watch Lisa place a monitor on the table beside the bed and turns it on. "This will be a little cold," Lisa tells me before she places the probe on my belly. I watch as Lisa slowly starts moving it across my belly and stops as a strong heartbeat fills the room. The baby's heartbeat, my baby, and it's alive.

I glare over at the screen to see a small little dot. It doesn't even look like a baby yet, but it's got a heart, and it's strong. "So, what do you see?" I ask Lisa as she studies the screen. "It's too early to tell anything other than it's alive," Lisa says as she moves the wand more to get some measurements of the baby.

"So how far am I?" I ask pretty much knowing the answer to that one since me, and Dimitri only had the opportunity only a few times in a few weeks. "It looks like you are eight weeks, give or take a few days," Lisa says as she finishes the measurements.

We will put you on a good diet, and I'll give you something to help put some weight back on you. We will continue lots of fluids and plenty of supplements and vitamins. I'll keep a close eye on the baby's progress, and hopefully, as it develops more, we can determine what it is. A boy, girl, fairy, or nightwalker," Lisa says as she finishes up. My heart sinks as I think of raising a little nightwalker. I wasn't sure how I would manage it since I knew nothing about them other than they destroyed my family and lived on blood. What would I be able to offer a child like that? My mind raced at the odds of my situation.

New Hope - Chapter Forty Eight

"I can't thank you enough for what you did for Emily, she is my whole world. I can't imagine life without her. I want you to know we are forever in your debt," Dimitri says. "My dear grandson, you and Emily are my family. I will do whatever it takes to protect you both. Do not hesitate to come to me when things get ugly," Nolan tells Dimitri.

A grin spreads across Nolan's face. "You have fulfilled the promise that the two families held for years. I told you when you were little that you were special. I have known all these years that you would be the one to fall in love with that special girl downstairs. Take care of her and the baby, I want to become a grandparent again, minus all the greats, lol," Nolan says to Dimitri.

"Can I see her now?" Dimitri asks. "Yes, you can, but remember that she may still be unconscious and unaware of what happened to her. If she comes to, try not to put her into shock with the news that she died, and don't alarm her of the baby's state. She may not even know that she's pregnant," Nolan reminds Dimitri. "I will be very careful with her," Dimitri says as he gives Nolan a hug. "I'm going to head back to Winchester Court, if you need me just give me a call," Nolan says before he turns and heads for the door.

After Nolan leaves, Daniel comes running up to Dimitri. "I didn't know what to do when she died," Daniel says. "Thank you, bro," Dimitri says as he pulls Daniel into his arms and almost squeezes the life out of him. "I didn't do anything," Daniel gasps. "You were here when I couldn't be. That is enough for me," Dimitri says. "It's what brothers do," he replies as Dimitri squeezes harder.

"I'm going to move her up to her room, so can you guys go get the royal doctor and nurse of the royal family to come here. Inform them that they will be staying on the premises till Emily gets better and the baby is born. Get them whatever they need to set up a home hospital room for Emily. Make sure to update them on Emily's condition and to keep her identity and whereabouts a secret," Dimitri tells Daniel. "I'll get it ready," Daniel replies.

Dimitri heads out of the room, leaving everyone to their tasks while he heads down to see Emily. Dimitri can feel his heartbeat in his chest as he makes his way through the house.

"A baby, I'm going to be a dad," Dimitri thought to himself as the excitement filled him with delight. "A little girl or boy running around. Will it be a little fairy, like Emily or a boy that is a guardian like me?" Dimitri thought to himself as he made his way down the steps toward his study. "I can't get too excited; what if it didn't make it? I got to push these ideas out of my mind till I know for sure," Dimitri reminded himself as he approached his study door.

Dimitri pushes open the door to see Emily lying peacefully on the table where he last saw her. "A welcoming sight," Dimitri thought to himself as his heart speed up as he got closer.

Dimitri, for the first time, sees her wings glowing and moving in a slow rhythm as her chest slowly rises. Her skin is now pinker and not the pale color that he had seen the last time he was with her.

Dimitri sits down beside Emily as he watches her breath. He watches her wings flutter, and its a sign that she's still with him. He runs his fingers down her cheek, and the warmth of her skin soothes his ragged soul.

"I thought I was going to be too late. When Daniel called me, my world stopped. I can't live in this world without you," Dimitri tells Emily as he strokes her face.

Dimitri stands up, then reaches over taking Emily into his arms. Gently Dimitri walks toward the door in hopes that Emily will open her eyes, but she still sleeps. Dimitri pulls her close so he can feel her warmth against his body.

Dimitri lays her on the bed, as gently as he can without disturbing her. She looks timeless as she sleeps without making a sound or moving.

Never leaving her side, Dimitri stays in the room watching Emily till the Nurse arrives. "My name is Lisa, Nolan and Daniel sent Dr. Harris and myself over to attend to Emily. We have been updated on the situation and I can assure you that she is in good hands. I still can't believe she managed to survive the attack that killed her whole family and everyone on the lot. I thought you were dead too," Lisa says as she walks over to Dimitri. "I think we all scattered when it happened. Chris her other guard managed to get her to safety while they took me for a while. That whole ordeal is all behind us for now, so her identity is to be kept a secret as well as mine and Chris's. I want to welcome you to my home. You will be safe here, the Nightwalkers will not bother us here. We are under the protection of the royal family of Winchester. Have they informed you that she is pregnant?" Dimitri asks Lisa. "Yes, they did inform me. I will take care of them both, you have nothing to worry about," Lisa says as she walks over to Emily. Dimitri watches Lisa start an IV, then hooks up a monitor so she can see Emily's vitals while they all wait for her to regain consciousness.

"I will monitor her vitals until she regains consciousness. I'll be here with her the whole time. Between Dr. Harris and me, she will have someone here at all times," Lisa tells Dimitri.

"How do her vitals look right now?" Dimitri asks. "She is stable right now. I will keep you informed on her progress at all times. If anything changes I will notify you immediately," she tells Dimitri. "What about the baby? Can you tell if the baby is ok?" Dimitri asks. "She's very early in her pregnancy for me to hear a heartbeat with my stethoscope. I will have to bring in some equipment to get a better look at the baby. Daniel is working with Dr. Harris to get all the stuff we need," Lisa says.

"Once I get the ultrasound machine in, then I will know more about the baby. I'm hoping that the machine will be delivered later today," Lisa explains. Dimitri lets out a sigh of relief, "a baby, I'm going to be a daddy, and Emily, I know, will be excited when she finds out."

Dimitri gently scoots Emily over and pulls her into his arms. All the days of trying to find everything they needed to perform the spell with Nolan's help, finally caught up with Dimitri as he laid with Emily in his arms. Dimitri fought to stay awake, but couldn't keep his eyes open. Quietly the nurse and the doctor worked around the sleeping couple as they monitored Emily's vitals.

Dimitri never moves as he holds Emily in his arms. Dimitri doesn't know what the future holds or what they will face together but at this moment, he will treasure every special moment they have together.

The Gift Of Light - Chapter Forty Seven

Inside the room, Nolan continues to chant and wave his wand over Emily's body. The ball of light grows then explodes into tiny little lights around Emily's body.
Emily's body rises from the table and hovers lifeless in front of Nolan.
Nolan continues to chant as the lights around Emily's body burn out, leaving smoke surrounding her. Nolan continues.....
More light begins to circle Emily's body, leaving Nolan exhausted. Nolan continues, knowing its working.
Then a tiny light starts coming from Emily's back. The light slowly grows in size. Nolan steps back as he watches Emily.
Then Emily's wings explode from her back and come to life with a slow rhythm. It's the only sign that it worked.
Her body slowly comes down and rests back on the table. Nolan examines her and waves his wand one more time just to boost her life force.
Motionless other than the slow rise and fall of her chest and her wings in motion are the only signs that Emily's alive. Nolan leans over to check her pulse. It's slow and steady, but it's there. Satisfied with the results, Nolan heads upstairs to deliver the news to Dimitri.
Nolan walks into the living room to see everyone sitting on the floor with sad faces. Chris and Daniel scurry off the floor as Nolan heads over to Dimitri, who is getting to his feet. "It worked, but she still has not regained consciousness," he says.
Everyone in the room lets out a breath of relief. "Is that normal for her to be unconscious?" Dimitri asks. "Yes, she died, and her body has to have time to recover. It could be hours or days before she regains consciousness," Nolan explains.
"There's something else you might want to know," Nolan says. "What?" Dimitri asks as he looks at him with concern. "She's with child, but I don't know the status of the baby as of right now. I felt it's presence when I was doing the spell. It most likely died when she did. I don't know if I brought it back with her or if it still is dead. Only time will tell," Nolan tells Dimitri, who looks shocked.
"A baby!" Dimitri chokes out. "I was a nightwalker when we..............and it could be a fairy, a nightwalker, or something else. "That is the least of your worries. She's not out of danger yet. She will need fluids and plenty of rest. Then we can have some specialists come in and take a look at the baby if she doesn't miscarry," Nolan tells Dimitri. "Miscarry," Dimitri chokes out. "Yes, there is a possibility of her losing the baby. I don't have the equipment or means to check on the baby. Emily is too early in her pregnancy. Let's just take one step at a time and see what happens," Nolan tells Dimitri.
